Description

Tarte aux Oignons is a classic French onion tart with sweet caramelized onions baked in a creamy egg custard over crisp shortcrust pastry. Simple, savory, and perfect for brunches, light lunches, or elegant starters. A true taste of French comfort.

Ingredients 

  1. 1 shortcrust pastry sheet

  2. 500g onions, thinly sliced

  3. 1 tbsp butter

  4. 3 eggs

  5. 200ml crème fraîche or double cream

  6. Salt

  7. Black pepper

  8. Pinch of nutmeg


Instructions

1. Prep Pastry
Line tart tin with pastry. Prick base. Chill 20 min.

2. Blind Bake
Bake at 190°C (fan 170°C) for 15 min. Cool.

3. Caramelize Onions
Cook onions in butter over low heat 30 min until golden. Cool slightly.

4. Mix Custard
Whisk eggs, cream, salt, pepper, nutmeg.

5. Fill Tart
Spread onions in base. Pour custard over.

6. Bake
Bake at 180°C (fan 160°C) for 30–35 min until set and golden.

7. Rest & Slice
Cool 10 min before slicing.

8. Serve Warm
Great with salad or soup.
